Global Ministries:
Friends Boys School, Belize
History
Friends United Meeting has been involved in Belize since the early 1960s when Sadie Vernon began a Girls Continuation School and later the Friends Boys School. Mike and Kay Cain continued the work at the boys’ school from 1996 until their retirement in 2008.Friends Boys School Building, Belize City, Belize
Transition
In 2009, Sam and Becky Barber, along with their four children, will take up where Mike and Kay left off. Since nearly 60 percent of Belize’s population is under the age of 19, Sam and Becky are eager to work with the young men in Belize City to provide quality education and life skills, helping these men to be attractive candidates in the work force.
Hopes for Belize
Many of the children in Belize live in single parent homes or with a grandparent. The Barbers hope to influence the boys by modeling a good Christian family, as well as to encourage parental involvement in the school as much as possible. Foremost, the Barbers want students to experience hope, to feel loved and to recognize the possibilities their futures hold. Sam and Becky also want to explore and implement a worship group for Friends. This group will be foundational for continued ministry in Belize. “We want to share with the Belizeans the Light of God and fan it into a flame that burns to follow God’s leading.”
