Did you lose a cell phone?

Quaker Haven Camp called Heather today to say that they found a cell phone in the Friendship Lodge where we stayed. I believe she said it was a Samsung. They are going to mail it to Heather, so if any of you lost one, please contact Heather to retrieve it.

Happy Birthday Conner!

Conner turns 10 today. He is very excited about his Birthday. Mike went to school and had lunch with him and this evening we are going to his Grandmothers home (my Mom) for a birthday celebration. Pizza and Cake. His aunts, Uncles and Cousins will all be there. Thank you to everyone at Hinkle Creek Friends for being a part of Conner's life. He's been attending Hinkle since he was 5 years old. Hinkle is a home away from home for our family and I know, yes I know that Conner's membership at Hinkle has helped him in many ways. He feels loved, supported and knows he will be held accountable by his church family. He knows who God is and is proud of his church and his relationship with Jesus. I am looking forward to the day he actually is old enough to be a Trustee. I'd like him to someday play piano and give the message too. But, that is in Gods hands. I don't know if he is meant to be a Pastor someday but whatever he does I know he will have a good foundation to work from. With God in his heart and his happy and helpful spirit he is sure to go far! Happy Birthday Conner William!

May 14, 2009 This was my first post on the blog.

From the earliest days Quakers were known for speaking truth as they experienced it inwardly in their meetings for worship. They didn't make a distinction between belief and action. Truth was almost more of a verb than a noun; it was something which you 'did' as you experienced it. As they responded to a vibrant inner reality and obeyed the promptings of the Divine Light within, then action and speech became a natural reflection of that experience. And in acting in this way they came to discern more of its nature, and were led further into expressing it outwardly. So a testimony to truth developed which, in particular, led Quakers to be known for their honesty, straightforwardness, and integrity.

from Engaging with the Quaker testimonies: a Toolkit (published 2007), available from Quaker Books, Friends House

'Truth' is a complex concept; sometimes the word is used for God, sometimes for the conviction that arises from worship, sometimes for the way of life.

Mark your calendars for the first “IYM Fall Pastors Summit” scheduled for Thursday, October 13, beginning at 10 am and concluding by 3 pm. One of our newest meetings, Westfield Friends, will be serving as our host. The summit will include times of worship, equipping presentations, and plenty of time for focused conversation and prayer. There will be a modest charge for the event covering the cost of a noon meal. For bi-vocational pastors, we hope that this day will be valuable enough for you to take a day off to attend. For pastors living far away, we are planning a day that will be worth the long drive. More details will be coming soon.
All monthly meeting treasurers from throughout Indiana Yearly Meeting are invited to a reception and training at Friends Memorial Church in Muncie on Saturday, October 29, from 12-4. The reception is an opportunity for the Yearly Meeting to thank you for your efforts in your meetings. You will be able to enjoy a light lunch, meet your fellow treasurers, and hear from IYM staff about information and developments that may impact your work. Following the reception, Brethren pastor and H&R Block Master Tax Advisor Deb Oskin will provide a training seminar designed to help treasurers handle the issues most likely to arise in your meetings. We would like to see all treasurers attend this important event. Please RSVP by Friday, October 21. For more information or to register, please contact IYM Ministerial Advocate Matthew Hisrich (matt@iym.org, 765-319-3244).

Hinkle Creek Friends celebrates 175th Homecoming Oct. 16
The Times

Robert Stubbs, the Pastor of Hinkle Creek grew up in this church and knows much of its history, as well as the history of the cemetery, which is one of the oldest in Hamilton County. It is the resting place of over 20 Civil War soldiers and one soldier from the War of 1812.

Jay Haitt is a lifelong member of Hinkle Creek Friends, now in his 90s, he remembers as a boy coming to church on Sundays in a horse-drawn wagon.

Sharon Griffith is a sixth generation member of the church. Her grandmother Ethyl Horney wrote a book about Hinkle which is now kept in the Indiana Room at the Noblesville Library.

Hinkle was involved in the Underground Railroad, had its safe broken into by Indians, was destroyed by fire and rebuilt and there are many more stories like these. This is back when there were black panthers and wolves running wild in the woods.

It was the Quakers who founded Hamilton County and this little church on the hill. It has stood its ground since 1836 and continues to be a beacon in the community.

The fact that it is still a thriving place of worship after all these years is quite remarkable. It has been through the dedication and perseverance of its members that this little church has survived at all. Each generation has its own story to tell. The pioneers of this place were remarkably hard working, driven people. The church was the center of their lives and everything branched out from there.

Hinkle still has its work cut out for it in these modern times. It has electricity and heat now, but there are many more and larger churches and so many other distractions competing for people's attention. With its own unique challenges to face this generation of believers are equipped with the same time tested tools that they've always had. The word of God and a love for one another.

Just this past year the church went through a major renovation because of some structural problems with the building. With a renewed sense of accomplishment and purpose the little white church that could is poised for another 175 years serving God, serving his people and serving its purpose. To give hope to the lost and shelter from the storms of life. We call Hinkle "A place where love grows." When you step through the doors you can sense the history and there is a timeless quality. You feel a part of something bigger than yourself. It is a special place and all who are part of her past, present or future are surely blessed.

Homecoming Celebration in 24 Days!

I am so excited about Homecoming. The Homecoming Committee is really doing a wonderful job coming up with great ideas to make this incredible time in Hinkle's history really special and memorable. I cannot wait to see the history museum and the decorations and all of the plans come together. When the ceiling fell in the sanctuary there was some doubt as to whether we would be back home for the 175th Homecoming. But we are and we are so thankful to God for his guidance. Praise you Lord for your faithfulness and the steadfast love you've shown us. Please remember to pray for the entire homecoming weekend. Pray for Woody, Vonnie,Jeff and Mike. Pray for Bob and Paulette. Pray that the meetinghouse will just be brimming with love and joy that weekend as we celebrate the incredible milestone of 175 years glorifying God! Praise Jesus and thank you to everyone who had a hand in bringing Hinkle back to its feet this year. It was amazing to watch the Lord work through his people. We are his hands and feet! He is our heart and soul. So, with that being said, we have about thirty tickets left for Homecoming. Now, that is all the room we have in the sanctuary but we absolutely have extra room to bring in chairs so we will keep selling tickets to fill the sanctuary to the brim. So, don't worry about not getting a ticket. That will not be a problem. That will absolutely not be a problem. If they had 500 people in attendance for the 95th homecoming surely we can squeeze a few more chairs into the sanctuary. So, if you know of someone who might enjoy the Saturday night celebration please encourage them to come. I didn't really know what to expect last time Woody and Vonnie came to Hinkle, but I can tell you it was absolutely wonderful! I am so looking forward to celebrating all we've accomplished in the past year and what God has done through Hinkle in the last 175 years! Praise his holy name! Thank you Jesus and thanks again to everyone for their dedication to Hinkle Creek Friends Church. WHERE LOVE GROWS!!!

Happy Birthday Roscoe Gray!

Wanda Vassallo of Dallas, Texas, tells of an interaction a first grade teacher named Linda had with one of her students on the first day of school. Accustomed to going home at noon in kindergarten, Ryan was getting his things ready to leave for home when he was actually supposed to be heading to lunch with the rest of the class. Linda asked him what he was doing. "I'm going home," he replied. Linda tried to explain that, now that he is in the first grade, he would have a longer school day. "You'll go eat lunch now," she said, "and then you'll come back to the room and do some more work before you go home." Ryan looked up at her in disbelief, hoping she was kidding. Convinced of her seriousness, Ryan then put his hands on his hips and demanded, "Who on earth signed me up for this program?"
Maybe you can relate. Not long ago I smiled as I read a sign on the front window of a tattoo parlor. The simple message on the window read, “Yes, it hurts!” I’ve wondered if similar warning messages belong on the front doors of our meetinghouses. Becoming Christ-like doesn’t happen without painful experiences that can have a cleansing effect, yet feel like being sandblasted. The writer of Hebrews reports that even Jesus learned obedience through suffering.
If my concept of living for Christ or being a part of a church focuses on pain avoidance I’m likely to be severely disappointed or disillusioned. God uses pain to help me grow spiritually and develop Godly character. Yes, it hurts.   Doug Shoemaker

REMINDER

I'd just like to remind any of you who have pictures for the museum to try to get them to me as soon as possible. I have MUCH work ahead of me putting this room together and the sooner I can get pictures, the better organized I can be. I really don't want to put this together at the last minute. I will be scanning your pictures to make them uniform in size and get them right back to you. I would really appreciate your quick attention to this so we can all enjoy this special room for our 175th!

Wanted to let you all know that Kathy Stewart made it through her surgery on her foot after a little more than 4 hours!! They ran into a complication, but finally got things put together and she will have a very long road to recovery. She is pretty much wheel chair bound at this time. Please continue to pray for her as she recovers and that this surgery will be a great success for her. This girl has been through a lot with her feet trying to get them taken care of. She is home and in pretty good spirits despite all the pain.

Apologetix

Conner and I went to see the Christian rock band Apologetix Friday night at First Friends in Anderson. We had a great time and everyone was so nice! This is their website:
http://www.apologetix.com/index.php
And below you will find a quote from their lead singer and lyricist J. Jackson.

What do you want people to get out of your music?
I want to make them realize that there's more to the Bible than Adam, Noah, David & Goliath and Jonah. I want them to realize that there's nothing inherently bad about music or anything else that God created. I want them to realize that the Bible is an interesting book, and I want to inspire them to read it for themselves. I want them to discover how simple salvation is, according to the Bible. I want them to remember verses and stories from the Bible. And I want them to learn what I've learned, to feel what I've felt - to laugh, to cry and to get chills sometimes. But most of all, I want them to see that God is real, and that He cares enough to speak to them in their own language, whether that be English or rock and roll. And I want them to give Him a chance, because He's offering them a chance, and they need to take it.

It was really funny to see the Quaker Church sanctuary transformed into a stage with lighting and a fog machine. And it was really loud! We really got our moneys worth and were thoroughly entertained. If you ever have the chance to see these guys you should definitely go. And the message came through the music, they sang about Paul, Obadiah, Samson and Delilah.Conner bought a cd and the whole band signed it for him. We had a great night and everyone at First Friends are so nice and several will be coming to Hinkle Creek for the Homecoming. Since they are our sister church it is nice to occasionally get together and share in each others activities. Jack Holiday is the pastor of of First Friends and he is a very nice man. I would like to go there some Sunday for worship too. It's not really very far and I'm sure we can all learn new things from one another and it is always nice to make new friends.

PREPARE FOR WORSHIP

Good evening. I've been in a mode of preparation for Worship tomorrow and I'd like to ask all of you to join me in Centering Down this evening and take a little time to prepare your hearts to gather in His Name to Worship Him in Spirit and Truth tomorrow. It would be awesome if we would all be "prayed up" before tomorrow and expect great things from the Lord. Won't you join me in this time of preparation?

Session Five - Spiritual Worship

Last nights discussion was very positive and uplifting. We had a chance to talk about the worship experience. Several people shared special moments they remembered in which they were inspired and illuminated by the Holy Spirit.

We talked about coming to church with your heart prepared to experience God. Someone said her mother taught her to begin preparing on Saturday evening.

I listened with keen interest as Doug spoke of the leading of the spirit during worship and how we have to learn through practice how to discern between creaturely activity and a revelation from God. He called Quaker Worship an art form, meaning it takes time to pick up on all of the subtleties of silent worship.

Worshiping God is something that comes from the heart and experiencing Jesus together in spirit and in truth can refresh your spirit and give you a chance to walk closer to Jesus.

I loved last nights discussion because to me, it got to the heart of the matter. Taking time to wait upon the Lord, opening your heart to him, telling him that you love him and wanting to draw nearer to him. Every Sunday we have a chance to be amazed at the power and the glory of our awesome Heavenly Father. Can we come prepared and humble ourselves so that he can show us who he is and what we can be through him? We say we are waiting on him but it is us he is waiting on. We must be refined in the spirit and that takes time, attention and soul searching. If you ask him he WILL show you what you need to work on. When God is silent it is always for a reason. Not because he's distracted, or busy, or doesn't care. It usually means the ball is in your court. But as long as you move forward and never stop talking to him, you will make progress. You will feel different, act different and you will want to be different. I often asking God to do things like show me what  to do, tell me what to say, give me strength and show me the way. But is always his will that I am seeking. What would YOU have me do Father? My faith is strongest when I am aware of his guiding hand. When I can see him moving in my life. And I can see these things for what they are because I keep my eye on him. I am aware of his presence because my heart leaps for joy when he is near. I have come to love him because I have come to know him. He is faithful and he is constant. Don't be afraid of silence, it's part of the process, it's like spiritual rain. You grow in silence. It shows you have faith and will stop doing and learn to be obedient. If he wants you to wait then you can be sure it is for a good reason. He may sometimes be mysterious but he  is always right and always listening. He loves you and he just wants your love in return because when you are loving him he can do his work. Wonderful things will happen far beyond what any of us could ever even begin to imagine.

Let us come to the meetinghouse this coming Sunday fully prepared to be with him and with our hearts ready to receive him. I think he would love the opportunity to move within our church in a mighty way. Let's just give God the chance to show us the way.

Next Week; We are discussing ~ The Quaker Family Tree.
