Quaker Life
Invitation to Writers
Quaker Life, the Christian Quaker magazine, is eager to receive manuscripts of the following types, especially if they fit into the issue theme list:
Cover Stories: Based on the current theme list. Up to 1500 words.
Turning Points: true first-person stories that show the transforming presence of God. There is a lot of room for individual expression with this; we have had stories ranging from conversion experiences, to healing, to insights gained from service or evangelism, to vignettes of encounters with the poor. The stories may be outwardly dramatic, or they may point to inward transformation in quiet moments. We are looking for personal experience rather than sermonettes or abstract philosophizing. Length: 750 words.
Journalistic Reporting: reporting on the lives, ministries and activities of Friends, and the issues with which we are struggling. These articles may describe the participants, events, causes, effects, historical background and context, and attempt a balance between description and analysis. They should be no more than 1500 words. Photographs which help tell the story are particularly welcome. We welcome inquiries and proposals.
Readers Essay: essays may be about anything of relevance to Friends faith or practice. If the essay is devotional, the more personal the better; if instructional, the more practical the better. True stories make the essay more publishable. Length: usually limited to 750 words. We occasionally publish devotional poetry and, even more rarely, short fiction.
Ideas That Work: articles describing a project, program or idea that an individual or meeting/church tried and that worked. Length: 750 words, with photos if possible.
News: short (50-200 words), factual, news reports are always welcome, but are subject to heavy editing for both space and style. Photographs are encouraged.
Reviews: current books or movies you would recommend to Friends. Length: usually, 150-200 words.
Photographs/Artwork: Photographs and original artwork is especially sought. Color is used on the cover only; all other photographs and artwork prints in black and white.
2010 and 2011 theme list available by request.
