Prayer needed

Hello Friends.

I just wanted to let you all know that prayer is needed right now as we end this 2009 that things will look better for several of us in the congregation. Just to let you know, Tim and Heather have had a difficult time lately. With Heather's surgery on her knee and being more extensive than they thought, it is going to take longer for her to heal. It is difficult for her to function as far as cooking, cleaning, and just normal household duties. Then today, they had a toilet problem upstairs in their home and it flooded their house ruining their ceiling in the kitchen, the floor, and carpeting upstairs. On top of that, the hot water heater is leaking! With her problem, she cannot stay in the house during repairs with the dust and all. Those poor people - when it rains it pours! We certainly need to lift them in prayer! This evening, we received a call from Paulette's mother asking for prayer for her Dad. It appears he may have had a small stroke and couldn't talk this evening. She is alone trying to deal with that, so has asked if we could pray for them.

I know of others who have had a rough time at the end of this year that I won't mention here, but believe me our congregation needs prayer! We certainly don't want satan to get a foothold and use these circumstances to discourage us. I just felt I needed to share that with you as we are a family and care so much for each other. That is what Hinkle is all about!

May 2010 turn out to be the best year all of us have experienced with a freshness in our spirits from the Lord!

Quaker Oats

Quick: what does the Quaker Oats cereal have to do with the religious Christian denomination The Religious Society of Friends, better known as the Quakers? Turns out ... nothing - only clever advertising.
In 1877, Henry D. Seymour and William Heston founded a mill in Ravenna, Ohio, and named it the Quaker Mill. There are conflicting stories as to how the name came to be. One legend has it that Seymour chose the name after reading an encyclopedia entry on the Quakers:
"The name was chosen when Quaker Mill partner Henry Seymour found an encyclopedia article on Quakers and decided that the qualities described — integrity, honesty, purity — provided an appropriate identity for his company's oat product." (Source)
Another story said that Heston was walking on the streets of Cincinnati when he ran across a picture of William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania and a famous Quaker (Source). In whichever case, later that year the company trademarked the Quaker Man, described as "The figure of a man in Quaker garb." It was the first US trademark ever registered for a breakfast cereal.

The original 1877 Quaker Man was a full-length picture of a Quaker holding a scroll with the word "pure" on it (just in case the integrity/honesty/purity point didn't get across). In 1946, graphic designer Jim Nash created a black and white head portrait of the smiling Quaker Man and in 1957, Haddon Sundblom made the full-color portrait. The last update to the logo was in 1972, when Saul Bass created the stylized graphic that still appears on Quaker Oats product packages today.

GLADYS AYLWARD (1902 - 1970)

Missionary to China Gladys Aylward stands out as an example of how God can use someone of meager means and abilities when they give themselves over to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
Born into a working class family in Edmonton, London on February 24, 1902. Daughter of a mailman and oldest of two sisters and 1 brother. Unlike many famous Christians in history, she didn't excel scholastically or set her self apart based on her exhaustive knowledge of the Bible and the classic languages, rather her early life was marked with a propensity for play acting and a willingness to serve. God prepares those He calls for the roles they are to play and these propensities would come to be contributing factors in her success as God put them to good use.
Though raised in the Angelican Church, she was not a particularly religious person in her early years and her "adequate" education and working class social position left her with few options. She became a parlor maid at the age of only 14. Her call to missions came about when she attended a revival at when she was 18 in which the preacher expounded on giving ones life over to the service of the Lord. The message struck a cord in her heart and an awakening desire to serve on the missionary field began to blossom. Having spent the last four years serving others surely gave her a unique insight to a servant's heart. She gave her life to Christ willing to be used in whatever way He sought fit. Some sources indicate that her decision to pursue a missionary assignment to China may have come about from having read a magazine article about China, a nation where millions of people had never heard the Gospel.
She continued her work as a parlor maid with little chance to realize her calling. In her mid-twenties, she applied and was given a probationary position with the China Inland Mission Center in London but this endeavor didn't bear fruit. At the age of 26 her probation ended in failure. She had fallen short of their expectations and was rejected for service as a missionary to China. However, no one can frustrate the will of God or reject for service those who are called of God "For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. (Rom 11:29)
Determined to follow God by whatever means available, she continued to work and to save her money and after four years, at the age of 30, her opportunity came in the person of an aging missionary, Mrs. Jeannie Lawson,1 who was looking for a young assistant to carry on her work. Gladys was accepted but Mrs. Lawson didn't have the means to assist her with the passage to China. Adding to the difficulties, save as she might, Gladys lacked the funds to travel by ship, the preferred method of travel to distant lands. So she put her affairs in order and with only her passport, her Bible, her tickets, and two pounds ninepence, set off for a perilous, overland journey to the inland city of Yangchen, in the mountainous province of Shansi, a little south of Peking. An area where few Europeans visited and the people didn't trust foreigners.
The two women set about planing the best way to attract an audience to hear the message of Jesus. Knowing that the city in which they lived was an overnight stop for mule caravans and that the building in which they lived has once been an Inn, they determined to do some repairs and restore its original purpose offering food and care for the mules along with hospitality, food and a warm bed for the drivers at a fair price. It is reported that Gladys would run out and grab the halter of the lead mule and lead it into their courtyard. The other mules followed and the drivers went along for the ride.
In the evenings after serving a meal and before bed, the women would gather their guests and tell them stories about a man named Jesus. In this fashion, the Gospel message began to be proclaimed, not only at their Inn but by the drivers who carried the stories with them to other stops along their journey. It also served to open Gladys' mind to the new challenge of learning the language as she sat and listened to these stories, participating as she was able. She spent many hours each day learning to communicate in the vernacular of the locals until she finally was competent, something the China Inland Mission Center thought beyond her ability.
Shortly after this, her mentor, Mrs. Lawson fell and was seriously injured leading to her death a few days later. Gladys, along with the Chinese cook, who was a Christian, determined to continue the work. Fluent in the language, she began to share the Gospel in surrounding villages and through circumstance, became aware of the many unwanted children. Her missionary work turned in a different direction, care for these unwanted little ones. But her care wasn't limited to children only. During those years China was under attack by Japan and many Chinese soldiers were wounded. So she added their numbers to those for whom she provided succor. Her Inn became a refuge for 20 orphans and as many as 30 to 40 injured soldiers at a time.
The war intensified and her children charges now numbered around 100. She had become a citizen of China in 1936 and her activities in support of the local populace, including a bit of spying on the Japanese made it unsafe to remain in Yangchen. Being warned of a bounty for her capture, dead or alive, by Colonel Linnan a member of the local Chinese resistance, she gathered up the children and narrowly escaped the city.
Unable to use roads or transportation, she was forced to lead her children, on foot, over the mountains to the safer province of Sian some 100 miles distant. The trek took twenty seven days in which they had to endure the elements and many hardships. She herself had become ill en route and when they finally arrived safely, she collapsed. The doctors were amazed by the feat as she was suffering from typhus, pneumonia, a relapsing fever, malnutrition, and supreme exhaustion.
She regained some strength but never recovered totally from her illness yet this didn't stop her from continuing her ministry, now located in Sian. She started a church and once more she was sharing the Gospel in the villages, prisons and among the sick and helpless. Her ministry continued until 1947 when the new Communist regime told control. Gladys and other missionaries had to leave China and her choice of destination was decided because she had a burden for the spiritual condition of her native England.
She wrote, "England, seemingly so prosperous while other countries passed through terrible suffering at the hands of Communist domination, had forgotten what was all important - the realization that God mattered in the life of a nation no less than in that of an individual."
In 1958, after ten years in England, she left for Taiwan and started another orphanage. She remained here for the rest of her life serving God by serving His children. She died January 3rd, 1970.
She was known as 'Ai-weh-deh', (Virtuous One) by the Chinese who grew to love this foreigner they initially distrusted. She lived her life before God and for God and is an example of what He can accomplish using the least of us.
She gained some fame among Westerners in 1957 when the move 'Inn of the Sixth Happiness' was released. Although it was
"a well-produced, heartwarming movie starring the great actress Ingrid Bergman it was a thorn in the side of Gladys Aylward. She was deeply embarrassed by the movie because it was so full of inaccuracies. Hollywood also took great liberties with her infatuation with the Chinese Colonel Linnan, even changing him into an Eurasian. But Gladys, the most chaste of women, was horrified to learn the movie had portrayed her in 'love scenes'. She suffered greatly over what she considered her soiled reputation." 2

Bible Study tomorrow night

Well, I received a call from the Butchers about bringing food tomorrow night for Bible Study, so here is what I know so far if this helps any of you in food preparation:

Butchers are bringing "sloppy joes"
Stubbs's are bringing "nacho cheese dip & nachos" (maybe dessert??????)

Now, you can post a comment and add to the list!

We're back!!!

Just wanted to let you all know that Paulette and I are back home - FINALLY! We had a bit of a rough trip yesterday once we hit Indiana with slick roads, and traffic backed up for miles due to 8 slide-offs on I-70, but finally got home around 9:00 p.m.. We are SO glad to be home! We carried a few things in, heard a noise, looked around, and there was a mouse that had just gotten in a trap and was trying to escape. I ended his little journey real quick, then we turned up the heat, settled in and had a good night's rest. Can't wait to see everyone. Maybe our life will get back to normal now. See some of you tomorrow night at Bible Study and the rest at Church on Sunday!

Trish & Larry sent this to me via e-mail and it's too good not to share! Thanks

Amazing Sights

A childhoold friend that visited Jerusalem over the last month sent some pictures. Wanted to share.

The Garden Tomb.

The Eastern Gate. Notice how it is blocked up. The muslims have blocked it but because they read in the Bible that when Jesus comes back he will decend on the Mt. of Olives, which is close to where I'm standing and he will enter through the Eastern Gate.

Question

My Mom and I met Peggy(the one who lives in Deming)at Kroger today, and she said that Casey called her and said that there wasn't going to be Bible study tonight. I'm asking if there is Bible study just to make sure there wasn't a misunderstanding.

Merry Christmas!

I just wanted all of you to know how much I missed those of you who couldn't be at Church on Sunday. It was a little empty needless to say, but where 2 or 3 are gathered in His Name, He promised He would be with us and He certainly was!

Let me fill you in on a little of what you missed. The sermon was pretty short, but the point was that we buy gifts for other people, but the Greatest Gift to us was the Christ Child. I wondered what we give to Him at this time of year. So I wrapped up a big box sitting at the foot of the cross with a flap for all of us to write anything we want on a card or paper to give to Jesus. It might be your broken heart, your anger, a habit, or most importantly, your soul! It could even be a better committment to Jesus. Maybe you need to forgive someone this year and give that to Jesus! Whatever it is, there is a catch! Once you put that in the box and give it to Him, you can't take it back! We would never think of taking back a gift we give to someone in this life, but often we say, "I'm just giving this to Jesus", then suddenly we have grabbed it back and try to fix it ourselves. Whatever you put in that box is FOREVER! I will never read what you put in there - that is between you and Jesus and I sure don't want any names on the cards. When Paulette gets back, we are going to go up to the Church and pray over that box and dedicate all of those things to God. It is all symbolic, but there is something to say about releasing it and really giving it to Jesus once and for all! I'd like to leave that box there for a couple of weeks for those of you who weren't there today so you can have your opportunity to do that. Once we are finished, I'll take the wrapping off the box, place the cards in a brown paper bag, and burn them without ever seeing them. When I served on the Indian field, they believed that when you burnt something precious, the smoke rose as a prayer to the Great White Spirit. So, with that in mind, that's why I'll be burning them. I pray you will want to participate and give something you've held in your heart too long, to Jesus!

I leave in the morning (Monday) for Missouri and we will spend Christmas there before returning home. I just wanted to take this opportunity to wish all of you a Blessed Christmas like you've never experienced before! May God bless all of you.

I love you all so much!

Pastor Bob

PBS 9:00Tuesday December 22 From Jesus to Christ:The First Christians

FRONTLINE explores the life of Jesus and the movement he started, challenging familiar assumptions and conventional notions about the origins of Christianity. Drawing upon new and sometimes controversial historical evidence and interviews with the nation's leading New Testament scholars, the series transports the viewer back two thousand years to the time and place where Jesus once lived and preached. The film traces Jesus' life, focusing on the events that occurred after he died and on his first followers, the men and women whose belief, conviction, and martyrdom created a major movement that transformed the Roman Empire in the space of only three hundred years. "Let the Reader Understand"- -Part three

(I caught part of part two last night. I think FRONTLINE is a great program. I haven't seen part three but I'm interested in seeing what they have to say.)

From WIKIPEDIA

"I Wonder as I Wander" has its origins in a song fragment collected on July 16, 1933 by folklorist and singer John Jacob Niles.[1][2][3][4][5] While in the town of Murphy in Appalachian North Carolina, Niles attended a fundraising meeting held by evangelicals who had been ordered out of town by the police.[1][5] In his unpublished autobiography, he wrote of hearing the song:
A girl had stepped out to the edge of the little platform attached to the automobile. She began to sing. Her clothes were unbelievable dirty and ragged, and she, too, was unwashed. Her ash-blond hair hung down in long skeins.... But, best of all, she was beautiful, and in her untutored way, she could sing. She smiled as she sang, smiled rather sadly, and sang only a single line of a song.[2]
The girl, named Annie Morgan, repeated the fragment seven times in exchange for a quarter per performance, and Niles left with "three lines of verse, a garbled fragment of melodic material—and a magnificent idea".[5][2] (In various accounts of this story, Niles hears between one and three lines of the song.[2][5][4][6]) Based on this fragment, Niles composed the version of "I Wonder as I Wander" that is known today, extending the melody to four lines and the lyrics to three stanzas

I Wonder as I Wander -Appalachia

1. I wonder as I wander out under the sky,
How Jesus the Savior did come for to die.
For poor on'ry people like you and like I...
I wonder as I wander out under the sky.
2. When Mary birthed Jesus 'twas in a cow's stall,
With wise men and farmers and shepherds and all.
But high from God's heaven a star's light did fall,
And the promise of ages it then did recall.
3. If Jesus had wanted for any wee thing,
A star in the sky, or a bird on the wing,
Or all of God's angels in heav'n for to sing,
He surely could have it, 'cause he was the King.

A Boy Singing to His Little Sister.....

Like any good mother, when Karen found out that another baby was on the
way, she did what she could to help her 3-year-old son, Michael, prepare
for a new sibling.
They found out that the new baby was going be a girl, and day after day,
night after night, Michael sang to his sister in mommy's tummy..
He was building a bond of love with his little sister before he even met
her. The pregnancy progressed normally for Karen, an active member of the Methodist Church in Tennessee
In time, the labor pains came. Soon it was every five minutes, every
three, every minute. But serious complications arose during delivery and
Karen found herself in hours of labor.
Would a C-section be required? Finally, after a long struggle, Michael's
little sister was born. But she was in very serious condition.
With a siren howling in the night, the ambulance rushed the infant to
the neonatal intensive care unit.  The days inched by. The little girl got worse.. The
pediatrician had to tell the parents there is very little hope. Be
prepared for the worst.
Karen and her husband contacted a local cemetery about a burial plot.
They had fixed up a special room in their house for their new baby but
now they found themselves having to plan for a funeral. Michael,
however, kept begging his parents to let him see his sister. I want to
sing to her, he kept saying.
Week two in intensive care looked as if a funeral would come before the
week was over.
Michael kept nagging about singing to his sister, but kids are never
allowed in Intensive Care. Karen decided to take Michael whether they
liked it or not.
If he didn't see his sister right then, he may never see her alive.

'He is not leaving until he sings to his sister' she stated.
Then Karen towed Michael to his sister's bedside.
He gazed at the tiny infant losing the battle to live.
After a moment, he began to sing.
In the pure-hearted voice of a 3-year-old, Michael sang:
'You are my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy when skies are gray.'

Instantly the baby girl seemed to respond. The pulse rate began to calm down and become steady.
'Keep on singing, Michael,' encouraged Karen with tears in her eyes.
'You never know, dear, how much I love you, please don't take my sunshine away.'

As Michael sang to his sister, the baby's ragged, strained breathing became as smooth as a kitten's purr
'Keep on singing, sweetheart.'
'The other night, dear, as I lay sleeping, I dreamed I held you in my
arms' Michael's little sister began to relax as rest, healing rest, seemed to sweep over her.
'Keep on singing, Michael.'

Tears had now conquered the face of the bossy head nurse. Karen glowed.
'You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. Please don't take my sunshine away.'
The next day....the very next day the little girl was well enough to go home
The medical staff called it a miracle.
Karen called it a miracle of God's love.
NEVER GIVE UP ON THE PEOPLE YOU LOVE.
LOVE IS SO INCREDIBLY POWERFUL.

Christmas, by Conner

I love Christmas when everyone's about, throwing snowballs and shouting out loud.
I also love the food and the cards we get.
On Christmas Eve Santa comes and brings us presents to play with and to have fun with.
Sometimes there are movies, posters or clothes.
Sometimes we get electronics or just plain old toys.
But Christmas is really about spending time with family and having fun with friends.
On that special day people come together to remember Jesus as the one he is.
For what he has done for us.
He will still be our Lord if we are pure or not.
Whether we are in the snow or by the fire, baking cookies or eating Christmas food we all know who will be there for us, our Lord.
And the people who have passed away or we didn't get to meet, no matter what we will be watched over
and kept safe.
But spreading cheer and having fun, looking at the Christmas tree, playing with toys and sitting by the fire, no matter what, IT IS CHRISTMAS!
Whether we are down, whether we are happy, it is Christmas and that's what it is, a time of love, a time of cheer a time of anything, it's still here.
"When the song of the angels is stilled,
when the star in the sky is gone,
when the kings and princes are home,
when the shepherds are back with the flocks,
then the work of Christmas begins:
to find the lost,
to heal those broken in spirit,
to feed the hungry,
to release the oppressed,
to rebuild the nations,
to bring peace among all peoples,
to make a little music with the heart…
And to radiate the Light of Christ,
every day, in every way, in all that we do and in all that we say.
Then the work of Christmas begins.

Crabby Old Man

Squeak asked me to post the following for all of you to enjoy. Bob

CRABBY OLD MAN/When an old man died in the geriatric ward of a nursing home in North Platte, Nebraska , it was believed that he had nothing left of any value.Later, when the nurses were going through his meager possessions, they found this poem. Its quality and content so impressed thestaff that copies were made and distributed to every nurse in the hospital. One nurse took her copy to Missouri .The old man's sole bequest to posterity has since appeared inthe Christmas edition of the News Magazine of the St. Louis Associationfor Mental Health. A slide presentation has also beenmade based on his simple, but eloquent, poem. And this little old man, with nothing left to give to the world, is now the author of this 'anonymous' poem winging across the Internet.Crabby Old ManWhat do you see nurses? . . . .. . What do you see? What are you thinking . . . . . When you're looking at me?A crabby old man . . . . . Not very wise,Uncertain of habit . . . . . With faraway eyes?Who dribbles his food . . . . . And makes no reply. When you say in a loud voice . . . . . 'I do wish you'd try!'Who seems not to notice . . . . . The things that you do.And forever is losing . . . . . A sock or shoe?Who, resisting or not . . . . . Lets you do as you will,With bathing and feeding . . . . . The long day to fill?Is that what you're thinking? . . . . . Is that what you see? Then open your eyes, nurse . . . . . You're not looking at me.I'll tell you who I am. . . . . . As I sit here so still,As I do at your bidding, . . . . . As I eat at your will.I'm a small child of Ten . . . . . With a father and mother,Brothers and sisters . . . . . Who love one another.A young boy of Sixteen . . . . With wings on his feet.Dreaming that soon now . . . . . A lover he'll meet.A groom soon at Twenty . . . . . My heart gives a leap.Remembering, the vows . . . . . That I promised to keep.At Twenty-Five, now . . . . . I have young of my own.Who need me to guide . . . . . And a secure happy home.A man of Thirty . . . . . My young now grown fast,Bound to each other . . . . . With ties that should last.At Forty, my young sons . . . . . Have grown and are gone,But my woman's beside me . . . . . To see I don't mourn. At Fifty, once more, babies play 'round my knee,Again, we know children . . . . . My loved one and me.Dark days are upon me . . . . . My wife is now dead.I look at the future . . . . . Shudder with dread. For my young are all rearing . . . . . Young of their own.And I think of the years . . . . . And the love that I've known.I'm now an old man . . . . . And nature is cruel.Tis jest to make old age . . . .. . Look like a fool. The body, it crumbles . . . . . Grace and vigor, depart. There is now a stone . .. . . Where I once had a heart. But inside this old carcass . . . . . A young guy still dwells,And now and again . . . . . My battered heart swells.I remember the joys . . . . . I remember the pain. And I'm loving and living . . . . . Life over again.I think of the years, all too few . . . . . Gone too fast. And accept the stark fact . . . . That nothing can last.So open your eyes, people . . . . . Open and see.Not a crabby old man . . . Look closer . . . See ME!!Remember this poem when you next meetAn older person who you might brush asideWithout looking at the young soul within. We will all, one day, be there, too!PLEASE SHARE THIS POEMThe best and most beautiful things ofThis world can't be seen or touched. They must be felt by the heart.

Christmas invitation

Update on Paulette

Paulette called last evening and they finally got an appointment for her mother to see a doctor about her foot. Medical care is not the best out there, so it seems to take time to get help for someone. Her sister is arriving this morning to take her mother to the doctor while Paulette stays at home to take care of her Dad's needs. Tomorrow they all take him to the doctor for his weekly check-up and they are going to talk to the doctor about trying to admit her father into a nursing home or getting someone to come and stay full time to help out so Paulette can come home. Her sister will be leaving on Thursday to go back home which will leave Paulette alone again with the situation. So, everything is still up in the air on that front and not sure when I will be able to travel to pick her up. I would appreciate all of you praying for that situation so I can have my wife back home. She is committed to take care of her parents, but I sure do miss her. Seems I walk around this house not knowing what to do with myself. Even though it is a small house, it seems to be getting bigger everyday!

I'm back! (alone)

Greetings everyone!

Just wanted to let you know that I got back today from Missouri. Paulette had to stay behind to help her mother with her dad from his amputation on his foot. While I was there, the screen on my cell phone went out, so if any of you tried to text me, I couldn't see it. I stopped to see about getting another phone, but my plan calls for the one I have to be repaired. So, they gave me a loaner phone WITHOUT TEXT keyboard. So, if you text me, I may not text back or at least it will be minimum words since I don't do so well without the keyboard. Hopefully they will get mine repaired soon.

It seems like we have been gone forever. We both were very busy the whole time we were there trying to help out the folks with all the needs that they have. Besides mowing, mulching leaves, cutting limbs, repairing a roof, repairing broken plumbing, I had to build a ramp so her Dad could have access to the house and driveway with his new wheelchair. Paulette has spent much of her time helping to rearrange furniture so the wheel chair could get around the house along with helping in the kitchen doing a lot of the cooking, washing dishes, and helping her Mom get organized. It is a tremendous task at their age to have this sudden change. I must admit we are both exhausted, but are happy that we could be of some help to them.

I plan to be there Saturday for the Christmas Party (you know me - never want to miss good food!), be at Church on Sunday, have a North Central Area Pastors Christmas Dinner on Monday, get packed on Tuesday and leave Wednesday to go out to get Paulette. We plan to return the next day (Thursday) so we can be back for Church and candlelight service.

Thank you all for your prayers and understanding during this difficult time we have had with this issue. I REALLY appreciate Will stepping up to the plate and bring the message for me. It means so much to have people you can depend on. Thanks Will!

Well, that's about it. Looking forward to seeing you all.

God Bless!

Bob

Reminder - Bible Study Christmas Dinner

Saturday - December 5th @ 5:30

We will be having a pitch-in style dinner. Many people have signed up to bring a dish. If you have not feel free to bring any dish to share.

Also we will be having a Christmas gift game. Please don't go out and purchase anything. "Rewrap" that old item in the house you have been meaning to take to the Goodwill or your yard sale. The game is a lot of fun and will for sure create a lot of laughter.

Last thing... we are asking for Christmas music. Bring your favorite Christmas CD music for the evening.
